Variaties op een thema
Krisztina de Châtel made this solo for herself in 1979 with music by Philip Glass. She stands in the middle of the floor in a triangle of light, with two upright neon lights as only other decor. The dancer does not move from her spot. The dance focuses on the arms. The movement patterns seem simple but are in fact highly complex, suggesting a mathematical system.
The way she expresses the angular lines of the music, almost exclusively through arm movements, suggests force and sometimes even bodily recalcitrance. Her movements are so powerful that great tension develops in a picture that is otherwise largely static. (Arnhemse Courant)
